3. While Reading: The Hero’s Test (p. 27- 32) (12 minutes) As you read, please use what you have learned about plot and its pieces to create your own plot mountain for “The Hero’s Test”. In addition, please continue to write down any questions or visualizing while you read.

4. Discussion Questions for the end What is the major conflict? What type of conflict is it? Who is the protagonist? Use two pieces of evidence to support your answer. Who is the antagonist? Use two pieces of evidence to support your answer. Which character, the protagonist or antagonist, influences the conflict the most? Explain your perspective. What is the stated setting? What are two details that help to suggest the setting? How does the setting impact the conflict? How would this story look if it were set in Hershey, Pa in 2012? Consider the characters, the setting, and the conflict. What are the major events in the plot? List them in chronological order.

5. Final Word Class Discussion Today we are going to share our answers as a class to these questions. However, each group will be assigned a question to get us started. You have four minutes to create your group answer. Group 1: What is the major conflict? What type is it? Group 2: Who is the protagonist? What is your evidence from the text? Group 3: Who is the antagonist? What is your evidence from the text? Group 4: What is the stated (said) setting? How do you know (2 pieces of evidence)? How does it impact our major conflict? Group 5: How would this story look today?

6. Individual Activity As we have talked about facts and conflict, we are going to put them together today. In the edmodo assignment for today list a fact from “The Hero’s Test” and then following that list how that influences/impacts the conflict. Example: Man in the water: FACT: On January 18, 1982 The plane plowed through 14th Street bridge and plunged into the frigid water. Effect: Some people may die, and it would cause a massive traffic jam as well as a huge need for first responders. Note: The MAJOR conflict will be revealed when we see the protagonist interacting with it.
