Rubella Anatomy Paige Hopper

(German Measles) RUBELLA Rubella is a contagious viral disease, with symptoms like mild measles. It can cause fetal malformation if contracted in early pregnancy. This viral infection is also known as German Measles. Rubella is most likely curable and is only a mild infection. What is this Infection!?

What layer of skin does it infect? Skin is made up of two layers that cover a third fatty layer. The outer layer is called the epidermis. The second layer (located under the epidermis) is called the dermis. The layer rubella is found in the third fatty layer which is also called the Subcutaneous Tissue.

Need to know what Rubella may look like?

Signs and Symtoms Rubella infection of children causes a mild rash on the face, swelling of glands behind the ear, occasionally a short-lived swelling of small joints (like the joints of the hand), and low-grade fever.

Cause of Disease The disease is caused by Rubella virus, a toga virus that is enveloped and has a single-stranded RNA genome. The virus is transmitted by the respiratory route and replicates in the nasopharynx and lymph nodes.

Is their a cure? If you contract rubella while you're pregnant, discuss the risks to your baby with your doctor. If you wish to continue your pregnancy, you may be given antibodies called hyper immune globulin that can fight off the infection. Other “cure’s” are to just stay in isolation from others do to it being somewhat contagious from sneezing or coughing.

Is their a worst case? Before the rubella vaccine as many as 20,000 babies were born every year with birth defects because of the capacity of rubella virus to infect the unborn child. In fact, 85 of 100 women infected with rubella in the first trimester of pregnancy had babies that were permanently harmed. Rubella virus can cause blindness, deafness, heart defects or mental retardation in infants whose mothers were infected early in pregnancy.

Interesting Facts Rubella is known as “little red.” The first dose your child may receive is at 12 through 15 months of age. The second dose is given before entering school, at 4 through 6 years old. Can cause pink-eye in adults Getting Rubella during pregnancy can cause a miscarriage or premature delivery. Also known as “German Measles” or “Three Day Measles” In the infected areas your hair will begin to disappear.
