Tips for PROS Discuss everyday activities to build background knowledge. Encourage your child to make games or flashcards that you can use for reviews. Ask probing questions (Use the 5 Ws and always ask “how do you know?”). Find simple, creative ways to learn new vocabulary words. Challenge your child by having him/her to teach YOU about a concept or skill.

Car Activities Identify author’s purpose of advertisements and billboards. Listen and discuss an audiobook together. Analyze bumper stickers. Invent stories about people in the car next to yours. Summarize the day.

Home Activities Require your child to write a persuasive letter when he/she requests permission to do something. Word of the Week Challenge your child to create a review game that you can use to help him/her reinforce important skills. Create a song, rap, or poem to reinforce a skill Compare/Contrast TV Shows, family members, household items, etc.

Store Activities Calculate the median, mean, and range of a receipt Identify figurative language on printed materials Invent a new title for a store or cereal Compare/Contrast brand name vs. generic items Identify examples of fact and opinion
