4 Tone and Theme Answer the following questions in complete sentences: 1. What is the TONE the author displays in this poem? 2. What words or phrases reveal this tone? 3. Theme: Which of the following is the best theme for this poem?  Chores are horrible and kids should ignore them.  Parents who make kids do chores face bad consequences.  Chores and jobs.  Putting off chores leads to bad results.

5 Practice Theme Paragraph  Keeping your theme in mind, copy down two direct quotes (the exact words from the poem) that prove your theme  Make sure to include “” around the direct quote  After each quote in () put the line number

6 ICE quotes  How is this different that what we have been doing?  You are making sure that your transition is setting the reader up to understand the purpose of the quote.  You are DIRECTLY COPYING the example or statement from the text (citation).  Check out the example below: Johnny shows that he is always thinking of others when he says, “Stay gold, Ponyboy. Stay gold” (150). This proves that he is thoughtful since he is moments away from death, but still cares enough about Ponyboy to give a last piece of advice. 7 Check out this sample paragraph The best theme that is seen in The Outsiders is that people are the same underneath, even if they come from different backgrounds. This can be seen when Cherry tells Ponyboy that things are rough all over (55). Through this comment, she is letting Ponyboy know that even though she is wealthy and has a great future ahead of her, she still has problems. Perhaps the best example of this theme is seen when when Cherry and Ponyboy are talking in the parking lot. Ponyboy asks Cherry if she can see the sunset on the westside. When she responds, he answers, “You can see it from the eastside, too” (99). The quote lets shows that Ponyboy has realized that even though they are from two different classes, they both feel emotions and see the same things in life. These two examples show that the theme, people are the same underneath, even if they come from different backgrounds, is see in the book.
