ELA and Mathematics Common Core Natick MA Public Schools Kindergarten to grade 4 2012-2013

2012 Common Core framework Adopted by 45 states Part of Race to the Top movement PreK-12 English Language Arts and Mathematics Literacy standards for social studies, science and technology Clearly outlines what students understand and are able to explain

NEW ELA Massachusetts Common Core Framework is organized by grade level – clear outcomes of student learning by grade level Guiding principles focus on a balance of reading literature - stories, drama and poetry reading informational texts with foundation of reading skills, and explicit skill instruction in reading and writing Foundational Skills : Print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics and word recognition, and fluency New standards are in place at all schools

NEW ELA Massachusetts Common Core Writing As a process with a focus on writing to Persuade Explain Convey an experience Use evidence from text to support ideas

Changes to ELA More focus on informational text, now a balance of reading fiction and non-fiction Explicit instruction in phonics and word recognition and fluency (already a part of NPS literacy, just clearly outlined in the framework) Explicit use of writing process, on-demand and process writing

Grade 4 sample Identifies various genres – fiction and non-fiction, drama, poetry Responds through literature through speaking, writing, drama and art Uses context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, re-reading as necessary Uses text structures to comprehend non-fiction text (comparison, chronology, cause/effect, problem/solution)

NEW Mathematics MA Common Core Organized by grade level New common core standards are in place with Investigations and teacher-created lessons New standards are in place at all schools Math practices are embedded, with a movement towards how a student demonstrates their understanding Important aspect of mathematical understanding

Math Practices Are the application and the extension of math Will be significant part of assessments Important to get at student understanding and application of skills and concepts Are an integral component of mathematics in Natick

Math Practices Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them Reason abstractly and quantitatively Construct possible strategies and critique the reasoning of others Model (pictures, numbers, word that demonstrate mathematical thinking with mathematics Use appropriate tools strategically and purposefully Attend to precision Look for and make use of what you already know Look for and use strategies you use to solve other problems

Mathematics MA Common Core Content areas Operations and Algebraic Thinking Number and Operations and Base 10 (explicit focus in order to understand number); Fractions Geometry Measurement and Data (change: no longer studying probability)

Kindergarten changes Rote count by 1s to 100 Skip count by 10s to 100 Counts on from any given number Understands that numbers from 11-19 are composed of ones and tens Fluently adds and subtracts within 5 Uses objects and drawings to model and solve addition and subtraction problems to 10 Identifies and describes basic 2-D and 3_D shapes

Grade 1 changes Develops and uses multiple strategies for computation and solving story problems Demonstrates fluency to 10 for addition and subtraction Understands that two digits of a number represents tens and ones Mentally finds 10 more or 10 less with a two-digit number Breaks circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describing each as halves, fourths, and quarters

Grade 2 changes Counts within 1000, skip counting by 5s, 10s and 100s using, = Adds and subtracts 3 digit numbers using pictures, numbers and/or words Adds up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value Shows fluency, by memory, of addition and subtraction facts to 20 Sees rows in an array as a model for repeated addition, and writes an equation to show Uses addition and subtraction to solve one- and two-step word problems Shows coins and dollar bills for a given amount and solves word problems using these

Grade 3 changes Uses place value to round whole numbers to nearest 10 or 100 Demonstrates an understanding of fractions as parts of wholes and parts of a quantity Read, writes, and explains equivalent fractions Understands, represents, and compares fractions on a number line Determines the value of a variable in simple equations involving add, sub, mult and div Understands geometric concepts, including lines and angles

Grade 4 changes Uses a variety of appropriate, accurate and efficient strategies to solve problems Multiplies 2 digits by 2 digits Divides up to 4 digits with a single-digit divisor Adds, subtracts and multiplies fractions Understands geometric concepts, including lines, angles, and symmetry Converts units of measurement (linear, weight, time) Compares and interprets data

We are ready Our teachers are ready – they have reviewed the new standards, designed lessons, adjusted assessments to meet the new common core Our families are ready – teachers will discuss changes during curriculum night and in the first conference, including the ROSP changes Report of student progress (ROSP) will be adjusted for these changes
