1 Address Geocoding With support from: NSF DUE-0903270 Prepared by: in partnership with: John McGee Jennifer McKee Geospatial Technician Education Through Virginia’s Community Colleges (GTEVCC)

2 Background Address geocoding is the process of determining the spatial or geographic location of single or multiple addresses of interest.

3 Required Information  Reference data, which contains the location of roads and attributes like name, street type, to and from address numbers (for each side of the road), etc…  A table or list of addresses that you want to locate spatially.  An address locator, which defines the way the reference data is used to find matches with the addresses of interest.  This is created in ArcCatalog.

4 Reference data example Road layer with attributes like: Name Type – street, drive, lane, etc… Predir and Suffix – N, S, E, W, NE, etc… L or R F_ADD and T_ADD – the to (T) and from (F) address numbers on the left (L) and right (R) sides of the road

7 Geocoding Output Each red dot represents the location of an address of interest.
