Mussolini in Italy wanted to gain fertile lands of Abyssinia.
Dec 1934, dispute between Italian and Ethiopian borders at the Wal-Wal Oasis – 80km in Abyssinia. Italy claimed it was there’s and prepared for invasion – Haille Selassie appealed to League.
Britain/France turned blind eye in return for Stresa Pact (united stand against German rearmament).
After public outrage, Britain took it more seriously.
League put forward a plan that gave some of Abyssinia to Mussolini – rejected and launched invasion.
Clear cut case of a large state attacking a small one – sanction committee set up.
Some actions were delayed. Britain and France secret dealings – give 2/3 of Abyssinia in return for no war.
1936, Hitler moved troops into the Rhineland, French desperate for Italian support. Mussolini annexed Abyssinia.
