1 Diabetes You think you know but you have no idea.. Presenter- Kiana Nunn/ Chapter Secretary National Society of Black Engineers Drexel University Chapter

2 What is Diabetes?  Diabetes is when you have too much sugar in your blood  The sugar stays in the blood instead of going into the cells of the body  Caused by having too little or no insulin at all

3 What are the different kinds of Diabetes?  Type 1  When the body does not produce insulin  Usually diagnosed in children and young adults  Type 2  When the body makes too much insulin  Most common form of Diabetes

4 What are the symptoms of Diabetes?  Diabetes is a silent disease. You can have it for years and not know it.  Symptoms:  Being very thirsty  Urinating often  Losing weight  Blurred vision

5 What part of the body does Diabetes effect?  Eyes  Lead to vision loss or blindness  Heart  People with Diabetes are 2x likely to develop high blood pressure which can lead to heart disease and stroke  Feet  Harm the blood vessels and nerves in your feet  Can lead to amputation

6 Who’s at risk of getting it?  African Americans  2.8 million (13%) of all African Americans have Diabetes  African Americans are 2x more likely to have Diabetes than non- Hispanics  Hispanics  2 million (10.2%) of all Hispanics have Diabetes.

7 Why is it such a problem?  Diabetes is the 5 th deadliest disease  It has NO CURE!!!  Deaths in heart disease in women with diabetes increased 23% in the last 30 years  Every year, over 190,000 Americans die of diabetes and its complications  Treatment costs more money than AIDS and cancer combined!
