District, 5 kms from the centre of Athens, belongs to the urban city area of Athens. The versions of the name of municipality of Galatsi are many : For example some people believe that its name has been derived from Simeon Galaci who had large estates in the area. Some others claim that the name has been derived from Kostas Galatis, ex-mayor of Athens. The majority believes that the name has come from the area Galatsi in Romania. Omorphoclissia Up to 1860 the municipality of Galatsi was an uninhabited and rural area that had as a characteristic a small church from the Byzantine era which is called “Omorphoclissia”. That little church, known to the older people with the name of Saint George, is one of the few Byzantine monuments that are saved today and is marked for its beauty and elegance.

Beer factory Lime-kiln In the middle of 1905 Galatsi started to be inhabited. The first dwellers were occupied with agriculture. In 1927, its population started to grow, Galatsi became a big village. Its inhabitants worked in factories, limekilns and quarries at “Tourkovounia”.There were a lot of quarries. The rocks of this area were used to build modern Athens

He was a rich land owner who helped a lot to the development of the area with his donation. In order to attract some people in the area he gifted fields grounds to his friends who exploited them and created a small town called “Lamprini”. Veikou st. nowadays The main street of the area that connects Galatsi with the outskirts of Atticα has taken the name of Veikos.

The water-source of the church Saint Glykeria, which was one of the most important churches in the area, supplied the inhabitants with water until the time that O.U.L.E.N. (one American company) created the first water-tower of Athens in Galatsi.
