1. Drill – List 3-5 things that you already know about the European “discovery” of the Americas. 2. Does “might” make “right”? Discuss. 3. There were three motivators for European exploration… what were they? 4. Powerpoint: Chapter 6, The Age of Exploration, Section 1, Exploration and Expansions 5. Homework – Read and outline 198 – 201, Quiz tomorrow!!!

I. Motives and Means  Why? God, glory and gold.  How? European monarchies had the $ and power by the mid-1400s, AND technological innovations made long voyages possible. II. A Race for Riches  Portuguese Explorers  Portugal took the lead in 1420

 Prince Henry the Navigator funded voyages to Africa.  1488 Bartholomeu Dias rounded the southern tip of Africa  Later, Vasco de Gama made it around Africa and to the coast of India. Got a ton of spices, brought it back to Portugal, and made a profit of several thousand percent!

 Portugal expanded search for spices. They established a port near the Molucca Islands (SPICE ISLANDS).  Stole control of the spice trade from the Muslims and Italians.  How did they do this?  Guns!  Awesome sailing skills!

 Spanish Explorers  Columbus, 1492  Thought he reached Asia, but actually reached Bahamas  Claimed the island for Spain and named it San Salvador (“Holy Savior”)  Did not find gold, so explored other islands throughout Caribbean

 Spain funded three more explorations  Columbus became an empire builder, not an explorer  Claimed land he “discovered” for Spain, transforming the islands of the Caribbean into colonies

 Ferdinand Magellan  1519 King of Spain funded his voyage  230 men and 5 ships departed and sailed for months straight. Had to eat sawdust!  Finally discovered the Philippines. Magellan was killed in a local war, only 18 men and 1 ship made it back to Spain in 1522  They were the first to circumnavigate (go all the way around) the world

 Spain and Portugal = competitive  Columbus’ discovery increased tension  Pope drew a line N to S in the Atlantic called “Line of Demarcation”  All land to the west of the line = Spain’s and land to the east of the line = Portugal’s  This agreement = Treaty of Tordesillas

 1500, Portuguese explorer, Cabral, reached modern-day Brazil  Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian explorer for Spain, reached the East coast of South America. First to realize the new land was NOT part of Asia… the “New World”  German mapmaker named the new continent, “America” after Vespucci
