3 Reading Stages  Emergent  Early  Transitional Stage of Development  Fluent Stage of Development –Grade 6 students are usually within the Fluent stage of reading and utilize various comprehension strategies.

4 Mathematics Number Sense Place Value/Comparing and Ordering Numbers Operations Patterns and Relations Operation patterns/Patterns in Place Value System ratios Measurement Length/Capacity/Area/Volume/Mass Geometry/Spatial Sense 2-D and 3-D Figures Data Management and Probability

5 Science Units are based on the Atlantic Canada Science Curriculum. The focus of the science program is to have the students observe, question, explore and record; to work with others in exploring and investigating, and to be sensitive to the needs of other people, other living things and the environment. Topics may include: Life Science – Diversity of Life Classification Animal Kingdom Adaptations Physical Science- Electricity Safety/uses/sources Static Electricity Circuits Electromagnets - Flight Drag/Thrust/Propulsion Earth and Space Science -Space Exploration Solar System/Stars and Constellations

6 Social Studies Overview The focus of the social studies program is to help children develop an appreciation, acceptance and understanding of the interdependence of people with their physical and social environment and with each other. Topics will include Mapping Government structure Elements of Culture Expressions of Culture Development of Canadian Cultures Rights and responsibilities of global citizenship

7 Health  The Body: Growth and Development  Positive Personal development and Healthy Relationships  Values and Practices of Healthy Living  Babysitting course  Drug and Alcohol awareness program (RCMP)

8 Technology  All students will be given opportunities to use technology of various kinds to research and present information. –Research –Communication –Reinforcement activities

9 Assessment Student learning across all areas of curriculum will be assessed through a balanced approach of informal and formal assessment. Rubrics will be used to assess student work however report cards will have letter grades which will reflect the overall term.  Oral Reading Analysis  Reading conferences  Writing conferences  Checklists  Portfolios  Self Assessments  Work Samples  Response Journals  Quizzes/tests  Anecdotal Reports  Oral and written reports

11 Homework  Literacy and math development is our main focus and therefore reading and math fact practice should be daily homework.  Homework is an essential building block of study habits needed for progressive grades in junior high, secondary and post- secondary education.  DOE Homework Policy –HRSB Assessment and Evaluation Policy  Agendas foster communication between home and school. Homework and/or messages are written in these daily and parents are requested to sign them each night. –Reading –Book Responses – personal reflections –Math Review/Practice work –Projects –Finish and/or practice work
