Definition THE TYPE OF ENGLISH TAUGHT IN FORMAL EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS.

Standard It is standard because it follows rules of English as described in English writing and grammar texts. Note: Standard English is edited. That is, the language is checked against a set of rules to ensure it is following those rules. Some people can speak and write standard English easily. Other people must be conscious about following the rules. More than one standard exists: North American standard English, British standard English, and so on.

Formal It is formal: polite and conservative (the language spoken to strangers or figures of authority) Some people can speak and write formal English easily. Other people must be conscious about following the rules. The English language uses vocabulary and a small number of verb tenses to indicate formality and politeness. E.g. Would you like some tea? (formal) Do you want some tea? (informal) Wanna tea? (colloquial, slang)
