2 Mission … to advance patient oriented research by providing specialized expertise and highest quality care in a professional and user-friendly environment. We want to make it easy to do research Where else can you show up with nothing more than an idea, initiative, and do a study? Free services - we draw / process the blood, we pay for labs, and we build the database I offer to help them write the application

3 UNC GCRC One of the largest centers: ~10,000 outpatient visits a year, 5 minutes to 8 hours ~2,500 inpatient days, 1 day to 72 days ~300 “approved” protocols ~200 “active” protocols Not per-diem center All kinds of protocols – nutrition, cancer, hiv, cf, hcv, diabetes

4 Standard Organization Nursing (UNC -10 beds, 6 rooms, 18 nurses, 2 phlebotomists) Nutrition – Research Kitchen, Nutrition Education/Assessment, Anthropomorphic Measurements Core Lab – HPLC, ELISA, Investigator wet lab work space Informatics – Computers, Networks, Databases, Training, New Technology Administration Research Subject Advocate Statistician Epidemiologist

5 Not So Standard Administration – has funds for investigators Body Composition Core Lab – DXA, pQCT, Activity Monitors, Indirect Calorimetry Training – 5 Doris Duke sponsored Fellows, 3 more by the GCRC, lot of K23 support

6 Informatics Core Director, 1/2 database programmer, 1/2 student ~100 users (GCRC staff and Investigators) ~60 PCs / Laptops 10 printers, 4 scanners File Server (Win2000), Database Server(Win2000/MS SQL), Web Server (UNIX) Computer connectivity Computer Training (Win, MS Office, Database Mgt, …) Web Development Database Development (Access, SQL) WHATEVER
