2 Session 1 – Crime & Deviance Key concepts revised today  Distinguish between crime and deviance  Describe the ways in which individuals are encouraged to conform to social rules both formal and informal Starter: Discuss whether you think any of this behaviour is deviant, criminal or both. 1. Stealing a bottle of milk from a doorstep 2. ‘burping’ after a meal 3. Drinking a can of lager on the bus 4. Taking paper clips home from work 5. Crossing a pedestrian crossing when the ‘red man’ is displayed 6. Keeping money you have been given in error in your change in a supermarket 7. Parking on a double yellow line 8. Not paying for a chocolate bar in a shop.

3 Crime: is usually associated with behaviour that breaks the formal, written laws of a given society. Deviance: is behaviour which does not conform to the dominant norms of a specific society. Deviant behaviour is defined by the norms of society, which means that different cultures, times etc may define deviance differently. Task Can you think of an example of behaviour that… a) Was classed as deviant in history that would now not be classed as deviant? b) Was accepted in history but would now be classed as deviant? c) Would be deviant in the UK but is accepted in other cultures?
