Chemical Bonding
2
What we know so far… Dot and Cross diagrams
3
Bonding Ionic Bonding – Often between Metal’s and non-metals – Always involves two oppositely charged particles – NaCl, ZnO, NH 4 Cl
4
Ionic bonding Drawing Dot and Cross Diagrams, tips, – Drawing arrows doesn’t show ionic bonding! – Always use square brackets – Try using an ionic equation
5
Common Ions Group 1 – 1 + Group 2 – 2 + Group 3 – 3 + Group 5 - 7
6
Common Molecular Ions Ammonium Hydroxide Nitrate Carbonate Sulfate Dichromate Phosphate
7
Working out Ionic formula Rules – Overall Charge is 0 – Work out the number of + ve and – ve ions required to balance the charges Quick check – Question 1 a & d – Question 2 a, c & e – Question 3 a, d & f
8
Covalent Bonding Definition… – The sharing of one pair of electrons between two atoms. – The bond is caused by the electrostatic attraction of the positive nuclei attracting to the negative electrons between the atoms
