1
The Mighty, Mighty, Mitochondrion!
2
Singular = mitochondrion Plural = mitochondria
3
Structure of a Mitochondrion -looks like a worm -has TWO membranes -1 st regular (outer membrane) -2 nd folded up (this one is called the CRISTAE) -Guess what both of these Membranes are made of???? -has a little bit of DNA
4
Illustration of Structure
5
Function of the Mitochondrion -The mitochondrion releases energy from carbohydrates. -carbohydrates get turned into a form of energy called ATP
6
Which cells have mitochondria? -ALL EUKARYOTIC CELLS HAVE MITOCHONDRIA -cells that need more energy have more than others
7
Where is the ATP actually made? -The ATP is made on the folds of the CRISTAE Why do you think they're folded up like that?
8
Why do mitochondria have DNA? Mitochondria have a little bit of DNA, but it's not organized. What does that remind you of?
9
Remembering trick: MITOCHONDRIA = ATP
10
Ribosomes
11
Where do they come from? -Ribosomes are made in the nucleus, and then sent out into the cytosol -They are made of RNA and protein combined together
12
Ribosomes make proteins
13
Remembering Trick: RIBOSOMES = MAKE PROTEINS
14
Endoplasmic Reticulum, a.k.a E.R
15
Structure of the Endoplasmic Reticulum The E.R. is a series of stacked membranes that look like tunnels of balloons.
16
The Function of the Endoplasmic Reticulum -The E.R. helps move materials around the cell. -The Rough E.R. transports proteins to other places after they’re made by the ribosomes. -The Smooth E.R. transports other materials.
17
Remembering Trick E.R.= HIGHWAY
18
The Golgi Apparatus The E.R. transports proteins to the Golgi Apparatus…
19
Structure of the Golgi Apparatus The G.A. looks like a bunch of semi- circular balloons stacked up.
20
Function of the Golgi Apparatus -The Golgi Apparatus packages, processes, and polishes proteins.
21
Remembering Trick G.A. = POST OFFICE
