COP21
2
COP stands for Conference Of the Parties. This basically means a meeting of all nations involved in the climate change negotiation process. The specific meeting this December is the 21 st meeting in this process – so as shorthand this conference is known as COP21
3
When and where? Paris, France 30th November - 11th December 2015 There is also the Conference of Youth (COY) happening 26 – 28th November in Paris.
4
Why is this COP so important At COP21, world leaders will meet with the intention of agreeing a legally binding and universal agreement on climate for the first time ever Our government can take a global lead in these negotiations – but there’s a lot of pressure for them to keep the status quo. They will only take bold steps if they know they have our support.
5
What are we asking for? Globally, four fifths of known fossil fuels must stay in the ground to keep global temperatures at a safe level (below 2˚c warming). We should be divesting from fossil fuels and investing in renewables with a target of 100% clean energy by 2050.
6
Possible campaign activities Photo petitions on social media Meetings with your MP Promote the online petition with Avaaz getting leaders to commit to 100% clean energy by 2050 Flashmob on campus or outside your local MP’s offices with a clear message to the COP COP in my City simulation Take part in the COY: 26-28 Nov
7
Communicating the message Each activity should have a clear ask and a clear target (decision maker) in mind. Help keep all our actions nationwide connected by tagging @nus_uk and using #COP21 on social media, and make sure you engage with local media. Key targets: Your local MP Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Amber Rudd MP (@AmberRuddhr)@AmberRuddhr
