1 Run on sentences and comma splices
Run on sentence=two or more independent clauses are joined without a coordinating conjunction and without punctuation. Example: Janet left for work early she arrived late.

2 Comma splice Two or more clauses joined with a comma but without a coordinating conjunction. Example: Janet left for work, she arrived late.

3 Strategies for revision
Use a period. Janet left for work. She arrived late. Use a semicolon. Janet left for work; she arrived late. Use a comma plus a FANBOYS. Janet left for work, but she arrived late. Use a semicolon and a conjunctive adverb (transition word) Janet arrived late; however, she arrived late.

4 Change one of the clauses to a subordinating clause by means of a subordinating conjunction.
Although Janet left for work early, she arrived late.

5 Let’s practice The chickens on campus play a famous role for our school, they make us unique. What if the chickens laid eggs and hid them somewhere they would get left behind. The chickens bring laughter to our students, without them we’d be an ordinary school.

6 I remember, after my first class I was leading out to the bookstore unfortunately, I stepped on the chickens’ dump Right now there many chickens living freely on campus but many professors don’t want chickens. Chickens should not be allowed to live freely on the campus because they cause stinky odors make noise and no one wants to clean after.

7 Roller skating is fun. There are lots of things you can do at the skating ring. I like getting at the skating ring early so that I can have a good place for my shoes. Also I like to get on the floor before everyone else because the floor is always so shine and clean. Skating is my favorite thing to do on Friday night.

8 Roller skating, while it’s fun, comes with goodness for the body
Roller skating, while it’s fun, comes with goodness for the body. To illustrate, when a person skates for an extended period of time, the heart rate increases. This increase in heart rate circulates blood more efficiently through the body as well as builds strength within the heart itself. Likewise, roller skating builds strength in leg muscles. As we skate, the muscles are constantly being used; this movement keeps our legs in shape. This is important because we use our leg muscles to function in daily activities. Are you ready to get your skate on?
