1 5 th Grade Parents Welcome!

2 Welcome to 5th Grade!  Dr. Brown – teaches Science and Social Studies.  Mrs. McMillian– teaches Math.  Mrs. Savoie – teaches Language Arts

3 Conference Time  8:30 – 9:15 by appointment only Please wait for us in the front office. We prefer to meet together to discuss your child’s needs.

4 School Wide Rules  Follow directions quickly  Raise your hand for permission to speak  Raise your hand for permission to leave your seat  Make smart choices  Keep your dear teacher happy

5 General Information  Library is on Mondays  Students enter the classroom at 8:00, and class begins immediately. The tardy bell rings at 8:20,.  Please send absence notes with your child following each absence.  Student planners are provided to each student by PTO. We will use these planners daily – please check it each night for homework and other assignments.  Please join PTO because your support helps our students  Field trips  5 th grade appreciation  Folders, planners,  Science Dome  Family nights, holiday parties

6 Transportation  You must send a note if your child is going home in a different manner, i.e. from bus to walking home with a friend, walker riding home with friend’s parent, etc.

7 Homework Expectations  Read 20 minutes each night and have parents sign response journal  Study or practice Spelling every night to prepare for tests on Fridays.  Check planner daily for any additional assignments

8 Grading Guidelines  60% major and 40% minor  One week will be given to redo or retake a major test for which the student received a failing grade.

9 Conduct and Work Habits Scale  E = 0-4E = 0-2  S = 5-9S = 3-5  N = 10-13N = 6=7  U = 14+U = 8+

10 Reading  Reading levels will be inventoried 3 times a year to show growth  Book groups  Response Journal – homework each night. They will be checked on Friday.

11 Language  Grammar lessons will be integrated with whole- group reading – focus will change from week-to- week based on needs of students  Spelling – new list given each week. Test at the end of each week.

12 Math Website: Pearson Success and First in Math Target Math Curriculum-1 st 9 wks- graphing, place value, knowledge of operations

13 Social Studies  Social Studies textbook supplemented with History Alive  Hands-on, interactive learning  Begin with geography and end with American current events

14 Science Interactive Journals Study Guides STAAR Experiments

15 Gifted and Talented  If you would like your child tested, please send a note by Friday, September 28, 2012

16 Discipline  Nurtured Heart Approach  New look reflected in Wed. Folder  NHA Parent meetings on Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at 12:00-1:00 and 6:30-7:30.  Scholar Dollar Bank

17 SCHOLAR  School wide incentive that encourages academic achievement and character development  Team day is on Tuesday and we wear blue on that day

18 Wednesday Folder Graded papers, notices, and the information sheet will be sent home on Wednesday. Please read the material, sign the information sheet, and return the folder with your child the next day. Any grade below 75 needs to be signed and returned. Keep up with grades on Gradespeed.

19 How you can help your child oEstablish a set time for homework oCheck over homework oDon’t just sign return papers, go over them with your child oREAD EVERY DAY! (at least 30 minutes) oGive them responsibilities at home oConsequences and rewards for behavior on Wednesday folder sheet and work oStay in touch with us! We’re here to help!
