VC3C VC WASH Cluster – Emergency Training 2 Larviciding VBDs

VC3C VC WASH Cluster – Emergency Training 3 VBD Larviciding Can be effective in controlling larvae, as a public health tool for dengue control but use for malaria control should be limited to settings with temporary localised surface water breeding sites only. Larviciding large or multiple water bodies is very expensive and requires a large number of staff for potentially little impact Water supplies in emergencies (particularly acute phases) are rare and highly valued.

VC3C VC WASH Cluster – Emergency Training 4 Dengue and chikungunya prevention Larviciding domestic water tanks and storage pots to kill Mosquito larvae + Rubbish clearance to remove other mosquito breeding sites like car tires, old tins etc

VC3C VC WASH Cluster – Emergency Training 5 Only use a larvicide that is safe for humans or animals. ABATE is WHO recommended for this. For dengue prevention use of Abate sand granules in domestic water containers is effective. Molluscocides can be used to control schisto.

VC3C VC WASH Cluster – Emergency Training 6 Fogging If residual spraying can be implemented quickly and effectively, there is probably no role for fogging or larviciding in the acute phase of an emergency

VC3C VC WASH Cluster – Emergency Training 7 Fogging Fogging (mix of diesel and insecticide) can be effective for the control of adult dengue vectors and house flies as these live outside, but is not effective against malaria vectors.

VC3C VC WASH Cluster – Emergency Training 8 Fogging Expensive as it must be repeated several times at short intervals (e.g., 3 to 4 times in a week)Expensive as it must be repeated several times at short intervals (e.g., 3 to 4 times in a week) Needs special equipmentNeeds special equipment Possible role in crowded settingsPossible role in crowded settings Follow immediately with IRS and/or ITNs for malaria & larvicide and garbage control for dengueFollow immediately with IRS and/or ITNs for malaria & larvicide and garbage control for dengue If residual spraying can be implemented quickly and effectively, there is probably no role for fogging or larviciding in the acute phase of an emergencyIf residual spraying can be implemented quickly and effectively, there is probably no role for fogging or larviciding in the acute phase of an emergency
