Newark and the First Civil War English Civil War (1642-1646/7, 1648-1649, 1650-1651) Newark fortified 1642-1646 Participated in 3 sieges Earthworks constructed by 3 armies: Royalist, Parliamentarian and Scottish

Aftermath Plague Survey of castle, 18 th March 1650 Defences destroyed, 1647 ‘the Site of the Castle of Newarke lately dismantled within the Circumferance whereof is one acre of ground or there aboute which ground is now of noe use by Reason of the Stone Rubbish and other Materialls of the Castle now demolished which doe incumber the same. And the said Castle is soe Ruienous that it will never be made habitable haveinge notheigne left but Ruinous peeces of the walles’ Resolved, &c. That the Fort at the River near Newark be disgarisoned, slighted, and dismantled. (Journal of the House of Commons 5:102, 1 st March 1647)
