The Spark that Set off the War The assassination of heir to the Throne of Austria-Hungary, Archduke Francis Ferdinand and his wife By 1914, Serbia (being supported by Russia) was determined to create a large Slavic state. A group of radical terrorists wanted Bosnia to be free from the Austrian- Hungary empire and be apart of that state. Gavrilo Princip, of the Black Hand, shot and killed both the Archduke and his wife.

Outbreak of War!!! This leads to an Outbreak of war in Europe, Serbia refuses Austria- Hungary’s demands, declares war on them, Russia backs Serbia, declares war on A-H, Germany Backs A-H declares War on Russia, France backs Russia, Etc.

Schlieffen Plan A military plan designed by General Alfred von Schlieffen. It called for a two front war with France and Russia. According to this plan, Germany would conduct a small holding action against Russia, while most of German forces would invade and conquer France. In order to invade France needed to go through Belgium. This violated the Belgium neutrality act and Britain declares war on Germany By Aug. 4 th 1914 All Great Powers Of Europe were at WAR!!!

Homework "Trench Warfare" Writing Assignment: (20pts) When war broke out in Europe in 1914, many thought it would be a quick and glorious war.(ending by Christmas) That it would be a War of heroes and victors would reap the benefits Pretend that you are either a French Foreign Legion or an French nurse who helped take care of wounded soldiers. Write a letter home about this brutal war. Be sure to include: What exactly is this barbaric tactic of "trench warfare" (4 pts) What are the conditions in the trenches (5 pts) Recall a story about a soldier that you witnessed (shell shock or poison gas) (5) Closing thoughts about this war (3 pts) (Is the war as glorious as you thought it was going to be when you joined?) Try not to make this sound like an answer to a test. The more "personal" you make this seem like a letter. ( 3 pts) Make this at least a page long. Use the reading I gave you to help you!
