3
Metaphor: Problems in Translation The ST cannot always be retained in the TT : the image that is attached to the metaphor is unknown in the TL the associations triggered by the SL metaphor get lost in the TL
4
Alternative solutions to the ideal of reproducing the metaphor intact
5
Some strategies in translating metaphors 1) similar meaning and similar form (big baby) ידידך יוסי הוא סתם תינוק גדול 2) similar meaning but different form (chicken) הלוואי ולא היית תמיד כזה שפן 3)the SL metaphor to literal language in the TL (paraphrase; no metaphorical use) (those kids are all brains) כל הילדים בבית ספר ההוא מאוד חכמים 4) Omission – Ignore the metaphor completely.
6
Similar challenges to idioms Can they be translated? What strategies? If so, can the meaning of the idioms or metaphor for the source culture be truly comprehensible to the target culture? How embedded and significant are these language devices?
7
Some cannot be understood at the same depth as for the source culture. May need to do much reading and speak to members of the source culture. Workshop today on Baseball idioms (see attached workshop sheets)
