4 How Can I Help My Child? *Listen to your child read nightly - set aside time for “family reading” - read higher level books aloud *Help him/her decode unfamiliar words *Ask higher level comprehension questions – “Why do you think…? How do you know…?” *Make reading FUN!!!

5 Components of Imagine It! Decoding/Blending Fluency (words per minute and expression) Spelling Vocabulary Comprehension Explicit (answers are clearly stated) Implicit (drawing conclusions, making inferences)

6 Assessments Progress monitoring is a key component in assessing a student’s progress in reading. Students are closely monitored to determine the instruction strategies that will best meet their needs. Weekly reading tests Biweekly independent comprehension tests End of the unit benchmark tests Fluency tests STAR Reading (computerized assessment) FAIR (statewide reading assessment) Iowa Test of Basic Skills (May 2011)
