The Moon Earth’s moon has no air or water. It has only one sixth of Earth’s gravity. There is a temperature range of 270 degrees Celsius.
2
The moon is about 1/4 of the size of Earth. How did the moon form? One idea is the collision theory, which states that a very large object hit the Earth. This object broke apart and a large piece of it went into orbit around earth. This became the moon.
3
Features on the moon’s surface include craters and marias. 1. Craters -caused by impacts from meteoroids
4
2. Marias - dark flat areas; thought to have been filled with lava at one time
5
The first manned moon landing happened on July 20, 1969 with the Apollo 11 mission. Buzz Aldren and Neil Armstrong, U.S. astronauts, landed a Spacecraft called the Eagle in the Sea of Tranquility. They walked around and explored the moon, bringing back Samples of rocks.
6
There were several other missions to the moon. Many photographs were taken.
7
There is renewed interest in exploring the moon today. Do you know why?
