9 Timeline of the 1960’s 1960- The first presidential debate was held on TV. It was between Nixon and Kennedy. -Nasa sent up ECHO the first satellite to be seen by the naked eye. 1961- On May 5, the first men were sent into space, Alan Shepard was sent into space on the “Freedom 7”. 1962- John Glenn was the first man to orbit the earth and he did it 3 times, it was a 5 hour flight.

10 Timeline 1963- On August 28 Martin Luther King Jr. made his famous “I have a dream…” speech. -November 22 John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas, Texas. 1964- THE BEATLES!!! -The first warning about cigarettes were put on their boxes. -The civil rights bill was passed to end racial discrimination. 1965- President Johnson ordered bombing raids on North Vietnam and Americans begin protesting the war. -The world’s first roofed stadium was built, it was the Houston Astrodome

11 Timeline continued. 1966- On December 15 Walt Disney died of cancer. 1967- The first heart transplant was preformed by Dr. Christian Barnard in Cape Town, South Africa 1968- Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. Two months after, Robert Kennedy, John F. Kennedy's brother was assassinated, too. Both were civil rights leaders. - On November 5, Shirley Chisholm was elected America's first black woman to Congress.

12 Timeline -1969-Nearly half a million people headed over to a 600 acre farm in New York for the Woodstock Festival. Many top rock musicians were there. It lasted three days, a weekend of music, love and peace. -July 20, 1969, 4:18 p.m. Apollo 11 landed on the moon. “One small step for man, one giant step for mankind.”

13 Glossary of Terms 1.Bell bottoms- A jean that is very tight around the thigh and then flares very big out at the bottom. 2.Mini Skirts- A skirt that’s hemline is very high above the knee. 3.Tie Dye- A t shirt that, handmade, was dyed with bright colors to make a multi-colored design. 4.Platform Shoes- A shoe with more than a 3 to 4 inch. 5.Pantyhose- A one-piece, skintight garment worn by women, combining panties and stockings. 6.Teddy Boys- The classic Ted had a long jacket with a velvet collar. The jackets were usually in plain material with blues or greys being common. 7.Mod- a style of dress of the 1960s, typified by miniskirts, bell-bottom trousers, boots, and bright colors and patterns. 8.Hippy- a style of clothing that pertained to a certain type of people. The look was loose shirts, bell bottomed jeans, peace signs, tie dye t shirts etc. 9.Beehive-
