Programme Objectives To rapidly upgrade the management skills of principals in selected schools in the Eastern Cape through a highly applied methodology To strengthen the working relationships between the three critical layers in the functioning of a school (EDO; Principal & SMT) To improve the support and coaching skills of EDOs and other DoE officials To develop sustainable professional learning communities To build a private/public funding and delivery model 2

Grade 12 Results Review – PMDP Schools The original pilot schools which undertook the PMDP in 2009 have improved by an average of 17.9% to date compared with improvement of 10.5% in KZN and 7.7% nationally over the same period The first post-pilot cohort of schools which undertook the PMDP in 2010 has improved on average by 12.4% in the last 2 years against the KZN average of 4.4% over this period The second cohort in 2011 achieved an average 5.9% improvement against an average decline in KZN of - 2.6% The average annual PMDP schools improvement over and above the KZN average for the period 2009- 11 is 7.4% Whilst the schooling system is quite complex, statistical research undertaken for the PMDP has confirmed that there are certain key management practices which correlate directly with improved results and these are currently being implemented through the PMDP with its participants. 7
