Sail Course ® Vocabulary Center of Buoyancy The center of gravity of the water displaced by a floating boat. Heel.Incline to one side due to force of wind or waves. Lever ArmThe distance through which a force acts. List Inclination of a boat to one side due to weight distribution. Moment.A force acting through a distance that tends to cause rotation. PitchingOscillation around the transverse axis; the rising and falling of the bow in waves. Righting Arm Horizontal distance between the vertical line through the center of buoyancy and the vertical line through the center of gravity. Righting Moment The righting arm multiplied by the yacht’s displacement. Rolling Oscillation of a boat around a longitudinal axis. Yaw To swing off course due to wave action or bad steering, usually to one side and then the other.
