Personality - The unique combination of traits that make you an individual. These traits include behaviors, attitudes, feelings, and ways of thinking that are characteristic of you.

If you heard gunshots what would you do? Why does one person act completely different than another person in the same situation?

Extrovert – Friendly and outgoing personality Introvert – Less outgoing and thoughts are directed inward. Optimist – Someone who focuses on positive. Pessimist – Someone who looks at the negatives and expects the worst.

Assertive – Able to stand up for yourself and express your feelings in a nonthreatening way. Passive – Holding back your feelings and yielding to others Aggressive – Communicating your ideas and feelings in a forceful or threatening way.

Who determines what type of personality is mentally healthy?

Psychologists – People who study the human mind and behavior. They study what it means to be mentally healthy. What is mentally healthy?

Mental Health – the state of being comfortable with yourself, others, and surroundings. 5 characteristics of Mentally healthy people 1. Realistic about their strengths and weaknesses. 2. Able to take on the responsibility of daily living. 3. Caring toward themselves and others. 4. Able to handle disappointment and learn from them. 5. Able to feel enjoyment and a sense of achievement.

Psychologists state that there are two ways our personality is formed. 1. Heredity – passing from parent to offspring just like hair color and eye color. 2. Environment or Surroundings For the most part, personality is a combination of both.

What does our environment have to do with our personalities being formed?

Children learn about feelings, attitudes and appropriate ways of behaving from the people close to them. This would most likely be their __________? Modeling - As children develop, they copy the behaviors of others. Ex. A child may learn to be respectful of older adults by observing his/her parents behavior toward the grandparents.

As children grow older and get into teenage years, friends, school, and community become increasingly important influences on personality. American teenagers spend more than half their time with other teens. Peer group – people about the same age group with the same interests.
