2 Exam Format Section A: Short answer questions Section B: Analysis of a Visual Representation Section C: Analysis of a Written Document Section D: Essay

3 Criteria 1.Understanding and appropriate use of historical terms, concepts, commentaries and interpretations. 2.Application of evidence to support arguments and conclusions. 3.Knowledge of events, people, movements and ideas.

4 4.Understanding of ideas and issues related to Crisis and Conflict, Social Life and Cultural Expression. 5.Analysis of American reactions to significant political and social events, issues, conflicts and crises. 6.Evaluation of attitudes to various social groups.

5 Section A: Short Answer Questions Dos Be concise Prepare for at least 4 different topics Memorise evidence (quotes, statistics, legislation, visuals) Don’ts Ramble on with limited direction Use colloquial language or slang

6 Section B: Visual Representation Spend a few moments annotating the visual Directly respond to the question being asked Aim to write only in the space provided

7 Section C: Document analysis Just as you did with the visual, spend a few moments annotating the document. When asked, draw upon your own knowledge as well as that presented within the document Take care to take into consideration the tone of the document and the style of language adopted by the author

8 Section D: Essay You will be asked to choose one question. There is a question from each of the Area of Studies. Crisis & Conflict Cultural Expression Social Life To be written in clear and concise paragraphs. One point, one paragraph You would benefit from studying no less than two topics that will be able to refer to in your response. Develop a clear and strong argument Establish an evidence bank (a list of quotes/statistics/posters etc from each AOS)

9 Final Tips Get a number of good nights’ rest in the lead up to the exam. Stay healthy (plenty of Vitamin C and garlic) Manage your revision time amongst all your classes. Use a weekly planner to help. See your teachers earlier rather than later for any help you need for the exam. Avoid distractions: ditch the mobile phone and the computer for a few days while you concentrate on your study. TABLES, diagrams and flow charts- use a variety of study skills to help prepare.

10 One of the most important keys to success in any exam is to read the question carefully and respond directly to what it is asking.
