1 Arthropods! YAY BUGS Sorry, Gina…

2 Defining Characteristics Bilateral symmetry “Tube plan”/True digestives system/Protostomes Exoskeleton (from ectoderm) Segmented body w/ jointed appendages Triploblastic coelemates

3 How do you remember these!? “Arthro” means “joint” in Greek (like arthritis = joint pain), and “pod” is “foot”  jointed legs! Picture a crab, or a butterfly, or an ant… they’re symmetrical, they eat and poop, they’re hard on the outside, and they have distinct sections to their bodies

4 …or sing!!! (sing to the tune of “I’m a Little Teapot”) Arthropods are insects, crayfish too Spiders, ticks and scorpions, oo, oo, oo With exoskeletons and jointed legs They creep and crawl all over the place… Legs tell the difference, you can see The letters in the name tell the legs easily Insect has 6 and arachnid, 8 Crustacean has 10 on the dinner plate! Arthropods are insects, crayfish too Spiders, ticks and scorpions, oo, oo,oo With exoskeletons and jointed legs They creep and crawl all over the place… (found at http://www.songsforteaching.com/science/lifesciencebiology/arthropod s.php) http://www.songsforteaching.com/science/lifesciencebiology/arthropod s.php
