Coding Performance Improvement Project Status Report By : Tajul Ariffin Shahul Hamid -Team Leader-

Project Status Our official project launch date was on the 30 th of September 2004 when we received the go-ahead from the Chief Information Officer, Mary. The team was selected from the company’s IT wing and also other departments. It comprises of 4 full- time members and 4 part-time members. So far, we have successfully completed the initial project-business documents such as the Team Charter, Stakeholder Analysis, Scope Statement, WBS, and initial project cost estimates.

Project Status The project is now in its 3 rd month and is falling behind in the earlier estimate schedule. The team was scheduled to deliver a 1 st phase-design proposal 2 weeks ago but they have not come up with anything. The team is also still very much in-the-dark on what Six Sigma projects are and how they should be run.

Project Status Justification The main reason for the backlog is that the team members do not realize the importance of the Six Sigma procedures to ensure total project efficiency. They are convinced that the Six-Sigma procedures are a waste of time and resources and do not believe in it. The 5-day Six Sigma course was inadequate as a fundamental learning tool. There was too much material in too little time.

Project Status Justification The project team is also now too saturated due to the members not being assigned new tasks because of the backlog.

Recommendations Conduct a new, more extensive Six-Sigma course for the whole team and include a deeper presentation of the syllabus materials.  This will help by giving the team a higher perspective on the Six-Sigma procedures.  This will also help with team structure as members learn to accept and play by roles that are beneficial to the team.

Recommendations Decrease the number of team members so that the distribution of tasks does not create unnecessary dependencies.  The focus of the part-time members is not on this project only.  Therefore, any slack on their part, due to other job responsibilities or duties, will hinder overall team progress.
