1. Degraded Image Courtney Ivey

2. The beginning… First things first, I choose a picture I took last winter of a tree on Strawberry Hill and turned it black and white. My friends and I hang out here often, so I thought it’d be a good choice.

3. …(two) I went to Durham Park and set the picture in the water. I thought some of the ink would wash away, but that didn’t happen..

4. …(three) After putting the sheet of paper in the dryer, my friend folded the picture into a little finger puppet thing.. (I’m not sure what else to call it)

5. …(four) I dripped red candle wax all over the photo

6. … (five) I decided to somewhat recreate the picture by adding small sticks, blades of grass, and flowers into the photo. My goal was for it to have an autumn feel.

7. …(six) Next– I peeled off the red wax from the paper and wrote out the word ‘fire’ and bordered it with torn pieces from the photo.

8. …(seven) Almost to the end... I decided to put the wax, paper, sticks, and grass into a bowl and catch the materials on fire.

9. …(eight)... I collected the ashes and with them made a new form of a tree

10. …(nine) And for the end... I uploaded the photo in to Photoshop and did some editing. Although the tree created from ash has a different form, I wanted to bring it back to the original black and white style.
