Hinduism religions Hinduism is one of the oldest religions Aryan India Hinduism’s roots are in the Aryan religion, which changed after borrowing ideas from conquered people of India Brahmanspirit gods The Brahman is the universal spirit made up of thousands of gods and goddesses writings The Upanishads are ancient religious writings that describe the search for Brahman

Reincarnation lives Reincarnation = the idea of passing through many lives to reach the Brahman Dharmalaw Dharma = the divine law of Hindus caste Law states that Hindus must perform the duties of their caste Karmaconsequences Karma = the consequences of how a person lives

Buddhism Gautama Buddhism = religion founded by Siddhartha Gautama Buddha One man who became known as the Buddha, or “Enlightened One” prince Was a prince who left his family and wealth to travel suffering Saw much suffering and questioned the need for suffering Meditated Meditated under a tree for 49 days, then he understood traveled Throughout the rest of his life, he traveled to tell people about his discovery

Nirvanawisdom Nirvana = a state of wisdom, occurs when a person gives up all desires Four Noble Truths The core of Buddha’s teaching is called the Four Noble Truths Eightfold Path The Eightfold Path describes the steps to eliminate suffering

Theravada Mahayana Buddhism is divided into Theravada Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism Theravada teacher Theravada Buddhists believe the Buddha was a great teacher, not a god Mahayana god Mahayana Buddhists believe the Buddha was a god who came to save people

Tibetlamas leaders In Tibet, a country in central Asia, lamas (religious leaders) headed the government Dalaigovernment The Dalai Lama was the government leader Panchenreligious The Panchen Lama was the religious leader Theocracy head Theocracy = a form of government in which religious leaders head the government

Jainism Jainism = another religion that challenged Hinduism strict Jains believe in nonviolence to all living creatures and live a strict life Ahimsanonviolence Gandhi Ahimsa = the Jain practice of nonviolence, influenced many people in modern times like Mohandas Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr.
