Example Summary: Malcolm Gladwell argues that success is not the direct result of innate talent, but instead that of hard work in his essay, “The 10,000-Hour Rule.” Gladwell claims that a minimum of 10,000 hours of practice is needed before “good” success turns into “great” success. He identifies two main factors to support this claim. First he demonstrates how great musicians practice much harder and longer than average musicians at a renown music academy. Secondly, he examines how famous people such as The Beatles and Bill Gates devoted much of their lives in preparing for their success. In both examples, each person contributed thousands of hours of practice.

What is a paraphrase? A restatement of the original passage’s points by putting someone else’s thoughts in your words. *Chapter 12 f 2 in ehandbook *Page 58-59 in book + Main points and details Clarify complex ideas -- Replace Mimic Forget to cite

The adventuresome Cat in the Hat runs amok while Mother is away, leaving a horrible mess for the two astonished children who are so well behaved. The remarkable qualities of the story are its rhyme--done with only 223 words--and its quirky illustrations that are as silly as the tale itself. The crazy Cat in the Hat runs wild while Mother is away, leaving a mess for the two surprised children who are so well behaved. The Cat in the Hat has many qualities that appeal to children. Using only 223 words and a catchy rhyme scheme, Dr. Seuss wrote the story of the naughty Cat in the Hat who gets himself into trouble. Children enjoy the adventurous story, and they can also learn to read because of the rhyming words.

How and when to cite: Direct quote, paraphrase, summary (lastname page#) Turnitin.com In-text (parenthetical) In Work/s Cited page www.easybib.com or Purdue Owlwww.easybib.com Bibliography

So, what does in-text citation look like? Gladwell says that “practice isn’t the thing you do once you’re good. It’s the thing you do that makes you good” (559). My favorite take away is that practicing is not just the hard work that goes into improving, but it should be considered the act that makes you good at what you do(Gladwell 559). Gladwell argues that a Mozart wasn’t a great musician until he practiced for 10,000 hours (559).
