Exploring Rates Objective: 1. Students will compare 2 quantities with different units of measure. 2. Make comparisons to one unit.
2
A ratio that compares two quantities with different kinds of units is called a rate. For example: 160 heart beats 2 minutes The units heart beats and minutes are different, but there is a relationship between the two units. When a rate is simplified so that it has a denominator of 1 unit, it is called a unit rate. For example: 80 heart beats 1 minute The denominator is 1 unit.
3
Example: Write the expression as a rate. Then find the unit rate. Example 1: 40 points in 5 games = the rate is = 40 points 5 games the unit rate is = 8 points 1 game or 8 points per game Your example: 96 students in 3 classrooms
4
Homework: Write each expression as a rate. Then find the unit rate. 1. $12.00 dollars for 3 notebooks 2. 54 cookies for 18 students 3. 48 chairs for 6 tables 4. 50 jumping jacks in 50 seconds 5. 56 points in 4 quarters 6. 260 miles in 8 gallons 7. 152 feet in 16 seconds 8. 1, 680 kilobytes in 4 minutes 9. $60 dollars for 4 CD’s 10. 200 sit ups in 5 minutes
