Ф When water falls from the atmosphere to the ground, it is called precipitation Ф Caused by either the coalescence process or the ice-crystal process. Ф Rain, snow, sleet, and hail are all forms of precipitation.

Ф 3 major ways water is stored: vapor in atmosphere, liquid or solid on surface and liquid in ground. Ф Surface storage occurs in oceans, lakes, reservoirs, and glaciers Ф Under ground storage occurs in soil, aquifers, and crevices of rock formations Ф In general, water storage is places where water is stored until it reenters the cycle

Ф Water vapor is a byproduct of photosynthesis. Ф Water in the soil is absorbed by plants. Ф Plants break down the water into hydrogen and oxygen in photosynthesis, however much of the water absorbed is released back into the atmosphere through the pores of leaves. Ф When the plants die the water in its tissues is released back into the environment.

Ф Runoff is a flow from a drainage basin or watershed Ф Usually unaffected by artificial diversions. Ф Total runoff is made of precipitation, surface runoff, and groundwater runoff. Ф Total runoff in stream channels is called streamflow.

Ф Gravity is the main source of locomotion, the forth is water. Ф Vadose is the water that exists in the aerated zone of soil. Ф Ground water is found in the saturated zone of soil. Ф Water percolates and is stored in aquifers.

Ф Physical process of moving H 2 O through top area of soil is infiltration. Ф Amount of water transferred depends on porosity and permeability of soil. Ф Other factors: puddles on surface, texture and structure of soil, moisture, and water concentration in soil.

Ф Condensation is when water vapor changes to a liquid. Ф In condenses into airborne particles, either form dew, clouds or fog. Ф Condensation results from a cooling of air or from the increasing amount of vapor in air, to the saturation point. Ф When water condenses, 600 cal is released into the environment.
