Strategy l OARNet (~25% Resources) l Shared Infrastructure making Ohio the leader in leveraging cloud computing in higher education l Hardware platform providing an integrated technology platform for higher education l Merit (~18% Resources) l Increase member affinity l Strategic services, but not strategic differentiators l A clear value otherwise unavailable l Synergistic to deliver l Are more valuable because they run on our network and thus make our network more valuable
9
Strategy l NCREN (<2% Resources) l Provide shared services for economies of scale l Broker services from 3 rd parties l Leverage the network where appropriate l WiscNet (<10% Resources) l React to market (peers, industry, members) l Choose best opportunities to experiment l Put successful experiments into production l MAX (<1% Resources) l Economies of scale l High performance l See what happens
10
Internet2 l Open Cloud Demonstration Project l Use volume to support “open standards.” l Leverage existing standards (IdM, Performance Monitoring) l Shibboleth/InCommon l PerfSonar l Leverage high performance network l Simplify policy, licensing, contracting l Experiment l Open to working with Regionals l Internet2 looks to be an aggregator not a provider
11
Summary l Significant minority are moving in this direction l Some top down, some bottom up l Approaches are as diverse as regional structure and business models l A real sense we have to do “it” l But what is “it?”
13
Parting Thoughts l The landscape has shifted underneath us l Cloud computing is part of that shift l Reacting to that shift requires addressing cloud computing l Can we address it the same way? l How can we help each other?
