The Nervous System

1-20-15 We have studied 7 body systems so far. Write each one and its main function. Skeletal Muscular Integumentary Digestive Circulatory Respiratory Excretory

1-20-15 We have studied 7 body systems so far. Write each one and its main function. Skeletal – gives us structure/support Muscular – protects organs/gives support Integumentary – protect & insulate organs Digestive – break down food into useable nutrients Circulatory – distribute substances (like oxygen & nutrients) around the body Respiratory – get oxygen into the body and carbon dioxide out Excretory – get waste out of the body
4
1-20-15 We have studied
8
1. What is the function of the Nervous System? controls and coordinates all actions and reactions sending information as electrical impulses.
9
2. Organs of the Nervous System Brain Spinal Cord Nerves
10
3. What are the 2 parts of the Nervous System? Central Nervous System Peripheral Nervous System These 2 systems work together
11
4. What are the parts of the Central Nervous System Spinal cord Brain
13
5. What are the 3 main parts of the brain? Cerebrum-The cerebrum fills up most of your skull. It is involved in remembering, problem solving, thinking, and feeling. It also controls movement. Cerebellum- The cerebellum sits at the back of your head, under the cerebrum. It controls coordination and balance. Brain Stem-The brain stem sits beneath your cerebrum in front of your cerebellum. It connects the brain to the spinal cord and controls automatic functions such as breathing, digestion, heart rate and blood pressure.
14
Peripheral Nervous System Nerves – specialized cells that transmit electrical impulses (signals) throughout the body
15
Mike the headless chicken
16
2/7/14 Sit in your assigned seat. Write the warm up question and answer. Why was Mike the headless chicken able to survive for 4 years without his head?
17
Did you study last night? What is the function of the nervous system? What are the organs of the nervous system? What two parts is the nervous system divided into? What are the three main parts of the brain?
18
6. What are the parts of the Peripheral Nervous System? Connects the body to the brain & spinal cord All other nerves that are attached to the spinal cord
19
7. What is a Reflex? Involuntary, automatic response to a stimulus Involves a simple nerve pathway called a reflex arc Example: Your hand touches a hot iron, you pull away
20
8. What is a Stimulus- Response? Stimulus (stimuli) ▫Anything that the body can react or respond to May be internal or external Response – the reaction to stimuli
21
9. Fun Facts about the Nervous System: There are more nerve cells in the human brain than there are stars in the Milky Way. The left side of the human brain controls the right side of the body and vice-versa. As we get older, the brain loses a gram of brain mass per year.
22
Are you a Left brain or a right brain thinker? Left BrainRight Brain Uses logic Detail oriented Facts rule Math and science Realistic Present and past Safe Practical Can comprehend Uses feeling Imagination rules Believes Appreciates Risk taking Present and future “big picture” oriented Fantasy based Spatial perception
