Chapter 3: Classifications Ilaria DiMatteo United Nations Statistics Division 7 th Oslo Group meeting 23-26 October 2012, Helsinki, Finland
2
From the drafting guidelines… Chapter 3 Classifications This chapter will provide details on the relevant classifications for energy statistics, such as the Standard International Energy Product Classification (SIEC), the classification of economic activities for energy statistics used for energy industries and energy consumers (based on the International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC)), and the classification of energy resources. Specific issues in linking these classifications with other international classifications, such as the Central Product Classification (CPC) and the Harmonized System (HS), and the use of existing correspondence tables will be discussed.
3
Main Objectives Practical guidance in the use of the classifications presented in IRES Country examples with focus on classification and classification issues

5
A. Introduction To briefly describe the importance of classifications To introduce the objectives of the chapter To briefly present the content of the chapter
6
B. Classification of statistical units This section is intended to cover: the choice of the statistical unit (establishment vs enterprise) plus country examples Identification of the ‘Energy industries’ within the classification of economic activities plus country examples Identification of ‘other energy producers’ plus country examples Identification of the ‘energy consumers’ plus country examples

8
D. Classification of energy uses This section is intended to: describe the taxonomy of energy uses Transformation Final consumption final energy consumption of which transport non-energy use Provide examples of country practices
9
E. Classification of mineral and energy resources This section is intended to cover the classification of mineral and energy resources as presented/developed in the SEEA-Energy Country examples
10
Some points for discussion Do you agree with the overall structure and draft content? Currently the classification relevant to electricity and heat plants and production needs to be included Are there additional topics that should be included? Are there suggestions for country examples to include and where? Specific comments to the questions posed in the draft chapter?
