1 TCAP Coach Lesson Multiplying fractions and mixed numbers
Lesson 7 Pages: 44-47

2 Getting the Idea To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators and then the denominators. To multiply a fraction by a whole number, rename the whole number as an improper fraction with a denominator of 1 Beginning course details and/or books/materials needed for a class/project.

3 Example 1 5x2/3=[ ] Strategy: Convert the whole number to an Improper Fraction. Step 1: Rename the whole number as an improper fraction. 5= 5/1 Step 2: Multiply the Numerators and multiply the denominators 5/1x2/3 = 5x2/1x3 = 10/3 Step 3: Convert the improper fraction to a mixed number in simplest form. 10/3 = 3&1/3 Solution: 5x2/3 = 3 &1/3

4 Helpful Hint Sometimes you can cancel like terms by dividing a numerator and a denominator by the GCF before multiplying. This will help in multiplying easier numbers.

5 Example 2 5/8x2/15 Strategy: Cancel like terms, then multiply.
Step 1: Divide 5 and 15 by the GCF, which is 5 1/8x2/3 Step 2: Divide 8 and 2 by the GCF, which is 2 1/4x1/3 Step 3: Multiply 1/4x1/3 = 1/12 Solution: 5/8x2/15= 1/12

6 Helpful Hints To multiply mixed numbers, rename each mixed number as an improper fraction first. Remember these steps for converting a mixed number to an improper fraction Multiply the whole number part by the denominator of the fraction part. Add that product to the numerator of the fraction part. That sum becomes the numerator of the improper fraction. The denominator of the improper fraction stays the same.

7 Example 3 6&5/9x 4&2/3 Strategy: Convert each mixed number to an improper fraction. Step 1: Convert 6&5/9 to an improper fraction. (6x9)+5=59  6&5/9  59/9 Step 2: Convert 4&2/3 to an improper fraction. (4x3)+2=14  4&2/3  14/3 Step 3: There are not like terms to cancel so multiply. 59/9x14/3 = 826/27 Step 4: Convert the improper fraction to a mixed number. 826/27= 30R16 30& 16/27 Solution: 6&5/9x 4&2/3= 30&16/27
