Resumes

Types of Resumes 1.Chronological This resume highlights past work experience and lists it in order from most recent to least. It shows a steady progress in your experience and education.

Chronological Resume When to Use: 1. want to find a job similar to the last one 2. job and education history shows growth and development 3. the name of your last employer is important

Chronological Resume When Not to Use: 1. want to emphasize skills you haven’t used in other jobs (show skills that you acquired outside of paid work) 2. Applying for a job you have never done before (no way to lists relevant skills) 3. you’ve changed jobs a lot (this is obvious and they will wonder why)

Types of Resumes 2. Functional This resume emphasizes your skills rather than your work experience. It lists them according to category and then has examples of you using these skills.

Functional Resume When to use: 1. you have little or no actual work experience in that area 2. want to emphasize talents and skills that you haven’t used at a particular job ( acquired through other outside activities 3. Have done a variety of jobs in the past that are not connected 4. done mostly temp work in the past

Functional Resume When Not to Use: 1. want to find a job similar to the previous one you had 2. have had a steady pattern of jobs and education 3. the of your last employer is important in relation to your job objective

Types of Resumes 3. Combination Combines the work experience section of the chronological and the skills section of the functional.

Combination Resume When to Use: 1. Your education is an important part of your skills presentation, but your practical skills are limited (just got out of school) 2. Your background shows a wide range of unrelated skills 3. Work history shows more time in other areas (changing professions)

Sections of Resume Objective -be specific with a one line sentence of the type of job you are looking -change this for each job you apply for; don’t just put a general statement (this impresses the employer)

Sections of Resume Education -since you are all in high school, use high school only, don’t add Junior School -you can place this below work experience if your work experience relates directly to the job (this is so they see it right away)

Sections of Resume Work Experience or Skills Section -Whenever possible Demonstrate to your employer your experience through descriptions of the activities you did that show you have skills they are looking for (manage a staff of 15 vs strong management skills) -Use action phrases and not complete sentences -Try to match the skills and experience you are listing directly to the job you are applying for

Sections of Resume Hobbies and Interests -Leave out of your resume unless you need to fill it up a bit, but link these activities to the job you are applying (Travel: for a job working with other cultures) -Put in if related to the job you are applying for and will help you get the job; for example, community work for involvement

Sections of Resume Awards and Certificates -Use this to list awards and certificates that you have obtained and help the employer see what an outstanding person you are

Sections of Resume References -List these at the bottom of your resume or on a separate sheet attached to your resume. -Some say it isn’t necessary, however, if an employer is interested in you they will want to check you out first and they don’t want to have to call you just to get your references -Always check with your references before you put them on your resume and ask them for a positive reference -If in doubt about what your reference will say, get a friend to call them and check (you don’t want someone to be giving you negative references)
