6  Kendra and Jojo are counting their marbles. Kendra has 38 and Jojo has 62. Kendra says they have 100 marbles altogether, but Jojo says they have 90. Use words, numbers, or models to prove who is correct.  RDW  Share your work with you neighbor.  Let’s check APPLICATION PROBLEM

7  Write this problem down the vertical way on you paper.  76+27  Now let’s model it by drawing a place value chart. Draw you chart like mine. 100’s 10’s 1’s  Label the place values.  Now draw both addends using the chip  Model.  Don’t forget to whisper count as you draw.  When you are done use place value language to tell you partner how your model matches the written addition. CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

8  Look at the ones place first. What is 6 ones + 6 ones?  13 ones.  The say ten way?  Ten 3  Tell you neighbor what to do on your model and on you written model.  Let’s show that on our model and written addition.  Check your work with a neighbor  On your written addition, you have written a 1 on the line. On you chart point to what the 1 stands for.  A new ten CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

9  What do we do next?  Yes! 6 ones+7ones is 13 ones, 1 ten and 3 ones.  So we write 1 new ten on the line below the tens place, and we write the 3 ones below the line in the ones place. What do we do next?  Add the tens  What is 7 tens +2 tens+ 1 ten  10 tens or 100  Show the steps on your written addition  Let’s read the entire problem  76+27=103 CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT

10  Here is a picture showing our work.  Notice the steps that we had written with the models we drew.  Practice modeling and writing these following problems. On your whiteboards or journals.  42+96  42+67  86+48  99+99 CONCEPT DEVELOPMENT
