3 POINT OF CARE TESTING Methods of measuring the biological compounds in blood or urine by the patient’s bedside, emergency rooms and even at patient’s home. Example: Glucometer

4 USES In the Emergency Department In the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) At the Doctor’s Clinic At home

5 NORMAL REFERENCE RANGE FASTING: 60- 110 mg/dl Post Parandial: Less than 140mg/dl 5 American Association of Diabetes

6 PRECAUTION Clean finger with Alcohol swab Let the Alcohol evaporate before proceeding for test. Immediately Close the test strip container to avoid exposure with moisture

8 Checklist Setting the lancet by making sure that the ejector is yellow coloured. Check the colour of the strip is yellow which is the same as that on the strip box i.e. 0mg/dl. Check the expiry date for the strip Insert the glucose strip into the instrument.

9 Checklist Check the code number present on the strip box to match the one on the instrument Cleaning the pulp of the finger with the spirit swab Give a bold prick to the pulp of the finger with the lancet. Put a drop of blood when the indication comes in the instrument to cover the yellow portion of the strip.

10 Checklist Note the reading and record it. Dispose the strip and needle in the waste container. Switch off the instrument.
