Health 2008-2009 Course Purpose Course Purpose to provide the most current in formation related to health science to examine the positive and negative impact of personal behaviors on overall health to engage all students in different types of self evaluation and reflection as a means of identifying strengths and weaknesses in overall health to encourage positive change when necessary to adopt a healthier lifestyle

Health 2008-2009 Text Health: A Guide to Wellness (for classroom use only) Course Requirements Arrive to class on time prepared with a pen or pencil Keep an organized notebook Submit all assignments promptly Prepare for quizzes and tests Participate in class discussions Exhibit respect for yourself, your classmates and your teacher

Course Overview Introduction Icebreakers-get to know your classmates and teacher Goal setting/decision making Self inventory- what is your current level of health? Analyzing major influences on health and wellness (genetics, lifestyle, health care and environment) The impact of medical research, medical technology and government policy on health care

Course Overview Fitness Health related vs. Skill related fitness The impact of personal fitness on other areas of health and well-being Methods of fitness evaluation- pulse, resting heart rate, recovery heart rate, blood pressure, BMI, body composition Fitness testing in physical education- goal setting Designing a personal fitness plan

Course Overview Nutrition Establishing individual daily caloric needs Examining the impact of consuming excessive calories on total health Nutrients and their role in maintaining optimal health A nation in crisis- obesity, diabetes and heart disease on the rise Analyzing personal daily dietary habits Healthy weight management Eating disorders

Course Overview Drugs and Alcohol The stages of chemical dependency Gateway drugs Stimulants, depressants, hallucinogens, narcotics and club drugs The impact of drug use on people, families, communities and the economy Laws related to drug use and abuse Outside speakers- overcoming addiction Research projects on drug-related topics

Course Overview Human Sexuality Male and female differences Relationships and dating Sexual orientation Sexual decision making Abstinence Contraceptive methods Sexually transmitted diseases Real world project

Course Overview Stress Management Identifying personal stressors Examining the physiological effects of stress on the body Analyzing personal response to stress Bullies, victims and bystanders Understanding depression and suicide School based services Career selection

Grading Students will graded on in-class assignments, homework, quizzes, tests, projects and presentations Students will earn an A,B,C,D,E or F for this course Students will earn two separate grades for health and physical education It is a requirement to pass Health for graduation from UDHS
