Before you begin….. Who is your audience? What are your goals for the site? Plan your site on paper first (things to keep in mind…….) Consistency Navigation – “three click rule”

The Web Create opportunities for interaction? Avoid “text-only” pages Don’t sacrifice elegance for pizzazz! If you reference a web site – provide an active link to the site.

The Front Door Give your site a descriptive title Convey the content of your site in a concise but engaging manner Explain the scope and purpose of the site Heighten the visitor’s interest and persuade them to actually stick around and explore your site

Accessibility Make sure your text is legible Your site should be viewable on both Mac and Windows Consider the needs of your viewers Compress images and other large files Make sure all your images have ALT-TEXT behind them

The End game Thoroughly test your site Ask a friend to sit down and explore your site. Do they get lost? Do they have trouble finding links? Do they have trouble understanding your labels? Do they understand your prose? Proofread carefully!

Classroom Web sites Break in to groups Review the following documents on the Wiki What should an educational web site include? Structuring the Classroom Web Site Visit the websites listed on the Wiki Identify “good” elements …..and “bad” elements Share with the larger group
