3 3 IMPACT REDUCTION IN SOUTH AFRICA SHIPP will adopt a Combination Sexual Prevention Approach:  Address primary drivers – sexual transmission in all its manifestations and enabling factors  Know your epidemic and context at local level  Construct joined up prevention response at local level  Set lofty goals but achievable targets

4 4 SHIPP APPROACH Engage with leadership in health, education and communities. Focus on key drivers and use evidence-based interventions. Enhance enabling environment at national, provincial and district levels to build the local (district & sub-district) responses, e.g. NSP 2012-2016 Seize opportunities to increase coverage, depth and quality of HIV prevention interventions. Enhance coordination and synergies with other PEPFAR funded partners (HIV prevention, treatment, and care).

6 6 LOCAL EPIDEMIC ASSESSMENT PROCESS (LEAP) LEAP assesses the district-level epidemic, helps to model a tailored prevention response, and creates an action plan. Pre-Piloting Phase: –Refine LEAP approach with stakeholders (national/province meeting) –Generate a customized LEAP tool for target districts (desk work) Piloting Phase: –After national/provincial buy-in, start LEAP in pilot districts (2-day meetings) –Follow-up district level activities with national/provincial managers –Review and modification of LEAP approach and modeling results Training and Full Implementation Phase: –Train national/provincial planners on aggregating LEAP results –Mentored roll-out of LEAP to all districts under SHIPP –Continuous review of LEAP-generated district action plans
