REFORM Progressives: reformers who were committed to improving the living and working conditions in American life. HOW? Promote social welfare Protect the environment Make government more efficient…less corruption/waste and more democratic…all people should be involved in decision making for the United States.

WHAT WAS THE PROGRESSIVE PHILOSOPHY? WHAT DID THEY BELIEVE? Defended rights of average citizens against the power of big business. Political: participation and protection of the government Economic: safe working conditions, fair wages Social: some assistance to economically disadvantaged and better living conditions in tenement houses and slums

Americans are harmed when monopolies controlled the economy and the government was laissez faire (hands off) with big business. SOLUTIONS Progressives want the government to solve society’s problems. Balance needs and interests of business owners and workers. Aid should go to needy people who were willing to help themselves. Use political action to achieve reform.
