2 Protagonist ●main character ○ hero and heroine usually create a connotation of nobility and dignity, which isn't always true for the protagonist. ■ ex) Holden Caulfield ○ Sometimes the protagonist can be evil. In this case, the antagonist will be portrayed as a sympathetic character. ● ex) Megamind

3 Antagonist and Villain character that opposes the protagonist’s goals and interests and so creates a major conflict. Ex: Poseidon in Homer’s “The Odyssey” A villain is an antagonist with evil intentions. Ex: Iago in Othello Doesn’t necessarily have to be another character: 1) A larger force - the fates in Oedipus Rex 2) The environment - the cold in To Build A Fire 3) Internal - the opposing desires of Hamlet

4 A character who contrasts with the protagonist in ways that bring out certain of his or her moral, emotional, or intellectual qualities. o a foil is usually a flat character  ex) Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet Foil
