International Space Station Clayton Wilson

ISS Artificial satellite in low earth orbit. First launched in 1998. Largest artificial body component in orbit.

ISS Members conduct experiments in biology, human biology, physics, astronomy, meteorology and other fields. The station is suited for the testing of spacecraft systems and equipment required for missions to the Moon and Mars.

ISS It completes 15.54 orbits per day. ISS is the ninth space station to be inhabited by crews.

History The station has been continuously occupied for 14 years and 134 days since the arrival of Expedition 1 on 2 November 2000. This is the longest continuous human presence in space.

ISS The station is divided into two sections, the Russian Orbital Segment (ROS) and the United States Orbital Segment (USOS), which is shared by many nations. As of January 2014, the American portion of ISS was funded until 2024.

Purpose International Space Station was intended to be a laboratory, observatory and factory in low Earth orbit. Planned to provide transportation, maintenance, and act as a staging base for possible future missions to the Moon, Mars and asteroids.

ISS Test spacecraft systems that will be required for long-duration missions. With ISS being around other spacecraft's can have repairs done with the help of ISS.

Fun Facts Goes so fast that it would go the Moon and back in a day. It took an astounding 136 space flights on seven different types of launch vehicles to build it.

Fun Facts It has 8 miles of wire just to connect the electrical power system. It has a complete surface area the size of a US football field.

Fun Facts It has more livable space than a 6-bedroom house. It has two bathrooms, a gymnasium and a 360-degree bay window.

Fun Facts There are 52 computers controlling the ISS. The ISS crews have eaten about 25,000 meals since 2000. 32,558 Big Macs.

Fun Facts The crew members on board the station experience a sunrise or sunset every 92 minutes. The ISS is arguably the most expensive single item ever built. The cost of the station is believed to be $150 billion.

Fun Facts The International Space Station marked its 10th anniversary of continuous human occupation on Nov. 2, 2010. The International Space Station can be seen from Earth with the naked eye.

Fun Facts The 75 to 90 kilowatts of power for the ISS is supplied by an acre of solar panels. There was a science fiction movie filmed in space aboard the ISS in 2008 called “Apogee of Fear” and it has never been released publicly. American astronauts on the ISS can vote in elections from orbit by secure email.
